This middleweight Kawasaki twin arrived for the 1980 model year as part of the company’s late-1970s/early-1980s push to broaden the KZ family with an affordable, easy-to-live-with street bike. It was offered in several closely related versions over a relatively short run, including standard and LTD variants, and later belt-drive editions, reflecting Kawasaki’s practice of tailoring the same basic platform to different riding tastes and markets. The line used Kawasaki’s familiar air-cooled parallel-twin formula and was positioned below the larger KZ fours, giving riders a practical everyday motorcycle with a simpler, lighter character than the brand’s bigger performance models. By 1981 and 1982 the range had expanded into distinct submodels, and by 1983 the belt-drive LTD had become one of the most recognizable versions. The nameplate disappeared after the 1983 model year, making it a brief but well-defined chapter in Kawasaki’s motorcycle history. Today, it is remembered as a straightforward, durable Japanese twin that appealed to commuters, new riders, and budget-conscious enthusiasts alike.
