The KLX400R was Kawasaki’s short-lived off-road four-stroke offered during the early-2000s partnership period between Kawasaki and Suzuki. It appeared first for the 2003 model year, when Kawasaki added a green-liveried, Kawasaki-branded version of Suzuki’s DR-Z400E platform to its lineup. The model was positioned as a serious enduro-style dirt bike rather than a trail bike with road focus, and it stood out in Kawasaki’s range because it borrowed heavily from the collaborative Suzuki-designed package instead of following Kawasaki’s usual KLX development path.
For 2004, the KLX400R continued in limited form, including a Canada-only listing in Kawasaki parts documentation. After that, the nameplate disappeared and did not become a long-running family line. In enthusiast circles, the bike is remembered as one of the clearest examples of the Kawasaki-Suzuki model-sharing era: mechanically very close to the DR-Z400E, but sold with Kawasaki branding and styling cues. Its brief run and unusual origin make it a niche but notable footnote in Kawasaki dual-sport and off-road history.
