This nameplate began in Kawasaki’s off-road lineup in 1979 as a lightweight 250cc dual-purpose machine sold in North America. It was part of the company’s early push to bring four-stroke, on/off-road motorcycles to a wider audience, and the original version was a compact, simple trail-oriented bike rather than a large adventure model.
The badge did not follow one uninterrupted production path. After the original late-1970s run, the name returned in the 1990s on a new generation of trail and enduro machines for Japan and Europe, including KLX250R and KLX250SR variants. Kawasaki then brought the plain KLX250 name back again in the late 1990s and kept refining it through the 2000s, with the model evolving from a more competition-flavored dual-sport into a broader-market off-road motorcycle.
A major modern-era reset arrived in 2008, when Kawasaki introduced an all-new KLX250 in Japan with fuel injection and updated styling, aimed at improved emissions and cleaner everyday usability while keeping the model’s lightweight dual-purpose character. By the end of the 2000s, the nameplate had also expanded into street-legal dual-sport and supermoto derivatives in several markets, helping establish KLX as Kawasaki’s approachable single-cylinder dual-purpose family.
In 2020, Kawasaki introduced the KLX300 and KLX300SM, and the KLX250 effectively gave way to the larger-displacement replacement in many markets. Because the nameplate has appeared in more than one distinct era, it should be treated as a revived historical line rather than a single continuous production run.
