The XJR badge began as Jaguar’s high-performance XJ offering for the 1990 model year, when a 4.0-liter version was introduced during the XJ40 era. It was conceived as the sportiest road-going expression of the XJ line, combining luxury-sedan refinement with a more focused chassis and a restrained appearance that set it apart from the regular models without turning it into a full bodykit special. Through the 1990s and early 2000s, the name continued across later XJ generations, including the X300/X308 cars and then the all-aluminum X350/X358 range, where it sat at the top of the lineup as Jaguar’s flagship performance saloon.
A second, separate chapter began when Jaguar brought the badge back for the 2014 model year after a gap in the early 2010s. That revival made the car the most sporting version of the then-current XJ, once again emphasizing super-saloon pace, discreet styling and long-distance luxury rather than theatrical design. In later years Jaguar extended the concept with the XJR575 as a final, more powerful evolution of the theme.
Across its history, the XJR name has represented Jaguar’s interpretation of the luxury performance sedan: understated, fast and closely tied to the company’s racing image, but always rooted in the XJ flagship rather than standing apart as a separate model line.
