MODEL HISTORY

The Story of the XE

Introduced as Jaguar’s modern compact sports sedan, this nameplate was announced in 2014 and launched globally for the 2015 model year, with North American sales following for 2016. It was positioned below the larger saloons in Jaguar’s range and was designed to bring the brand back into the premium compact executive class after the earlier X-Type era. The car was notable for being one of Jaguar’s first volume models built around the company’s Lightweight Aluminium Architecture, a major step in Jaguar’s shift toward lighter, more modern construction methods.

The vehicle reached production as a single-generation model and received a mid-cycle update during its life, keeping it competitive against established German rivals. Over time, it evolved from its original launch specification into a broader family that included rear-wheel-drive and all-wheel-drive variants, as well as higher-performance versions. The most extreme factory variant was the limited-production Project 8, which became a halo expression of the line and drew significant enthusiast attention.

In market terms, it served as Jaguar’s core small sedan for much of the 2010s and early 2020s, offering a traditional luxury sport-sedan format at a time when the brand was increasingly associated with SUVs. Production continued through the 2024 model year, after which Jaguar’s combustion-engine lineup was phased out as the company prepared for its next all-electric era. There was no earlier or later separate production run under the same nameplate.
