The Chieftain was introduced for the 2014 model year as part of the modern revival of Indian’s big-twin lineup. It arrived as a factory bagger with a fork-mounted fairing and integrated touring luggage, giving the revived brand a distinct long-distance model that sat between the more traditional cruiser styling of the Chief family and the full touring focus of the Roadmaster that followed. Indian has described it as one of the original motorcycles from the relaunch and the first of its kind in the modern lineup.
From the start, the Chieftain was positioned as a premium American touring bagger with a cleaner, sportier profile than a full dresser. Over time, the nameplate expanded into a broader family of variants and trim levels, including darker, more stripped-down interpretations and higher-equipment touring editions. The model also evolved technically as the brand updated its air-cooled Thunderstroke V-twin offerings and, more recently, added PowerPlus-based versions under the Chieftain name.
That evolution has not represented a discontinuation and revival, but rather a continuous production run with periodic updates, new trims, and changing engine offerings. As a result, the Chieftain remains one of the most recognizable modern touring motorcycles in the brand’s post-2011 era, closely tied to the company’s effort to combine historic styling cues with contemporary bagger comfort and technology.
