The Story of the Ioniq 9

This all-electric three-row SUV is Hyundai’s flagship battery-electric family model and the largest member of the IONIQ lineup. Hyundai first revealed it in late 2024 and positioned it as a major step in the brand’s EV strategy, with sales beginning in Korea and the United States in the first half of 2025 and additional markets following later. It was presented as Hyundai’s answer to buyers who wanted a larger, more family-oriented EV without moving away from the brand’s dedicated electric architecture.

The nameplate is closely tied to Hyundai’s modern EV era rather than any earlier gasoline model history. It was introduced as a clean-sheet design on the E-GMP platform, with the brand emphasizing its lounge-like cabin, flexible seating, and focus on comfort, space, and long-distance usability. Hyundai also described it as the first three-row SUV in the IONIQ family, which gave the nameplate a clear role at the top end of the lineup.

Because this is a recent launch with no earlier or separate historical run under the same nameplate, it has a straightforward production history so far. There is no known prior discontinued version or revival associated with this model name. In Hyundai’s lineup, it represents the brand’s move into the large electric SUV segment and serves as a new flagship for the IONIQ badge.
