MODEL HISTORY

The Story of the Santa Cruz

This compact sport-adventure pickup traces its roots to a 2015 concept that previewed a more urban, lifestyle-oriented take on the pickup format. The production version reached the market for the 2022 model year, with the launch taking place in 2021. It was positioned as a four-door pickup aimed at buyers who wanted open-bed utility in a package smaller and more maneuverable than a traditional midsize truck, and it became the first four-door pickup sold by the brand in North America. Rather than following a classic body-on-frame formula, it was designed to blend crossover-like road manners, everyday practicality and light-duty cargo versatility.

Since its debut, the nameplate has remained a single continuous production run, with no known discontinuation and revival. The model has been periodically updated rather than replaced, including a refreshed 2025 version that brought styling and feature changes while keeping the original concept of a compact, adventure-focused pickup intact. In the brand’s lineup, it occupies a distinctive niche: less work-truck, more lifestyle vehicle, with an emphasis on utility for active owners, weekend hauling and daily driving convenience. Its significance lies less in raw truck capability and more in how it expanded the pickup idea into a modern, cross-utility format for a market that had not previously seen many vehicles like it.
