The Story of the Elantra GT

The Elantra GT was Hyundai’s hatchback-oriented take on the Elantra family in North America, introduced for the 2013 model year as a more versatile, European-flavored companion to the sedan. It gave the compact Elantra line a five-door body style aimed at buyers who wanted extra cargo flexibility and a sportier personality without moving up to a larger vehicle. Hyundai later expanded the range with performance-leaning versions and refreshed styling, helping the nameplate develop a following among drivers who liked the practicality of a hatchback with a more athletic stance.

Across its run, the Elantra GT reflected Hyundai’s strategy of adapting global product ideas for specific markets. The model was closely related to Hyundai’s international hatchback lineup, but it was marketed in the U.S. and Canada under the Elantra GT name. That made it an important bridge between Hyundai’s mainstream compact sedan and its more enthusiast-oriented offerings. In later years, Hyundai added more aggressive trims and special equipment, reinforcing the car’s position as the sporty, practical member of the Elantra family.

The nameplate remained on sale through the 2020 model year, after which Hyundai shifted its compact-car focus toward newer products and different body styles. As a result, the Elantra GT is best remembered as Hyundai’s long-running compact hatchback alternative to the Elantra sedan, combining everyday utility with a slightly more expressive and driver-friendly character.
