Hyundai’s first independently developed nameplate, this car marked the company’s break from licensed assembly and became a defining milestone in South Korean automotive history. The project was shaped in the 1970s with styling by Giorgetto Giugiaro and debuted publicly at the 1974 Turin Motor Show as a concept before entering production in late 1975. Hyundai introduced the original 4-door sedan first, then expanded the range with a pickup in 1976, a station wagon in 1977, and a 3-door hatchback in 1980. In export markets, it helped establish Hyundai’s early overseas presence and became the first Korean car sold in the United Kingdom. It was also a landmark domestic car, widely remembered as the nation’s first mass-produced, homegrown passenger vehicle. The nameplate evolved into the Pony II in the early 1980s and remained part of Hyundai’s lineup through the end of the decade, with production continuing in Korea until 1990. While later Hyundai models eventually replaced it, this original nameplate is still celebrated as the car that launched Hyundai’s identity as a full-fledged automaker and set the foundation for the company’s global growth.
