MODEL HISTORY

The Story of the XR600R

Honda’s XR600R emerged in the mid-1980s as part of the company’s long-running XR off-road family, which Honda identifies as its four-stroke off-road brand launched in the mid-1970s. The XR600R first appeared as a 1985 model and became one of the best-known large-displacement, dirt-only Hondas of its era, aimed at serious off-road and desert riders rather than street use. Over its run, it was closely associated with endurance racing, Baja-style riding, and the broader reputation of Honda’s XR machines for durability and tractable power. Honda’s own production-race-machine materials still list the XR600R as an export-only model in 2000, indicating the nameplate remained active through that model year. The model was then phased out without a documented revival, making it a single continuous production run rather than a multi-period nameplate.
