MODEL HISTORY

The Story of the XR100R

This small-displacement off-road Honda was part of the XR family of four-stroke trail and playbikes that Honda developed to make dirt riding approachable for beginners while still appealing to experienced riders. Honda’s own historical material shows the XR100R in U.S. specification as a 1985 model, and by the early 1990s it was established as a long-running entry in the XR lineup. It used the familiar XR formula of a simple, durable air-cooled single-cylinder four-stroke chassis aimed at easy handling and low-stress ownership rather than outright competition. Honda continued to update the model through the 1990s and into the early 2000s, including a 2003 model-year refresh announced in 2002. In Honda’s 2003 off-road lineup, the XR100R was still being sold alongside the smaller XR50R and XR70R. The XR nameplate’s family-oriented off-road role was then carried forward by the CRF100F, introduced as a 2004 model, marking the end of the XR100R run and the transition from the XR to CRF naming era for Honda’s small trail bikes.
