MODEL HISTORY

The Story of the VTR1000F (Super Hawk)

Honda introduced this V-twin sport motorcycle in late 1996 for the 1997 model year, positioning it as a big-displacement road-focused sport bike rather than a pure race replica. In North America it was marketed under the Super Hawk nameplate, while other markets knew it by the Firestorm name. The model stood out at launch for its compact packaging, slim chassis feel, and the character of its 90-degree V-twin, which gave it a distinctive place in Honda’s lineup between everyday standard machines and the company’s more extreme supersports models.

The bike became known for combining strong midrange character with approachable road manners, which helped it build a loyal following among riders who wanted a large-displacement twin with real-world versatility. Its styling and engineering reflected a deliberate effort to create a performance machine that was easier to use on public roads than many of its four-cylinder contemporaries, while still offering the visceral sound and torque delivery enthusiasts expected from a high-capacity V-twin.

In the United States, the Super Hawk nameplate continued through the 2005 model year, after which the model disappeared from that market. The name itself was not a long-running Honda lineage like some of the company’s other historic badges, but this machine became memorable because it captured a particular era of Honda motorcycle design: a time when manufacturers were exploring large V-twin street bikes as a different kind of sport performance expression. For many riders, it remains one of Honda’s most distinctive twin-cylinder road models of the 1990s and early 2000s.
