MODEL HISTORY

The Story of the VT500 (Shadow 500)

Honda’s VT500 Shadow was a middleweight cruiser built around the VT500 V-twin family and introduced in the early 1980s as part of Honda’s push into the American-style cruiser market. The Shadow nameplate arrived in 1983, paired with the company’s larger cruiser offerings, and the 500-class version gave riders a smaller, more approachable alternative to the bigger Shadow models. It combined classic custom-cruiser styling with Honda’s reputation for engineering refinement, and it became known as a practical, easy-to-live-with bike rather than an extreme performance machine. The model’s run was relatively brief, ending after the 1986 model year. Even so, it remains a notable early chapter in the Shadow line because it helped establish Honda’s cruiser identity before the family expanded into larger and longer-lived Shadows in later years.
