The Story of the TRX400X

Honda’s TRX400X was the final evolution of Honda’s long-running mid-size sport quad, emerging in 2009 when the established 400EX nameplate was refreshed and renamed. The model carried forward the same basic formula that made the original 400EX a favorite among trail riders and recreation-focused ATV owners: a lightweight, performance-oriented two-wheel-drive chassis with approachable handling and Honda’s reputation for durability. For many enthusiasts, the name change marked a generational update rather than an all-new machine, but it also signaled the continuation of one of Honda’s most recognizable sport ATV lineages.

The TRX400X remained in production through the 2014 model year, serving as Honda’s classic sport ATV offering after the company had already shifted much of its ATV lineup toward utility models and the smaller TRX250X. Over its run, the 400X kept the simple, rider-friendly character that defined the family, while receiving incremental refinements to bodywork, chassis tuning, and equipment. It was especially valued by riders who wanted a reliable, mechanically straightforward sport ATV with enough performance for woods riding, track practice, and general play use.

Historically, the TRX400X is best understood as the last chapter in Honda’s air-cooled, carbureted 400cc sport-quad tradition. Its place in Honda history comes from continuity: it preserved the familiar 400-class formula for nearly two decades when viewed across the earlier 400EX era and the later 400X badge. For many ATV enthusiasts, it represents one of Honda’s most enduring and respected sport models.
