The Story of the Shadow Aero

Honda introduced this nameplate in Japan in 1998 as a U.S.-built heavyweight custom, a Shadow carrying a large-displacement V-twin and classic American cruiser styling. That original run established the Aero as a premium, full-size cruiser within Honda’s Shadow family, aimed at riders who wanted long, low proportions, shaft drive and a traditional chrome-heavy look rather than a sporty interpretation of the class.

After that early 1100cc-era chapter, Honda revived the Aero name for a different machine in the 750cc Shadow lineup. The later version arrived for the 2004 model year and became the better-known North American form of the nameplate: a mid-size shaft-drive cruiser with retro lines, floorboard-friendly ergonomics and the relaxed character that defined Honda’s cruiser strategy through the 2000s and 2010s. Over time, Honda kept refining this 750-era model rather than reinventing it, and ABS-equipped versions were added in later years.

The 750-era model remained on sale through the 2024 model year. By the following model year, Honda’s U.S. cruiser lineup no longer listed it, marking the end of that production period. Because the nameplate was used in two separate eras with a gap between them, it should be treated as a revived model rather than one uninterrupted continuous run.
