The Story of the Rubicon

Honda’s Rubicon nameplate debuted in 2000 on the TRX500FA FourTrax Rubicon, a North American ATV introduced as a comfort-oriented, high-capability utility machine. Honda positioned it as a more refined work-and-trail model, and the Rubicon badge quickly became associated with automatic operation, dependable 4x4 capability, and a smooth ride over rough terrain. The original model was notable for bringing Honda’s Hondamatic/HFT-style automatic transmission concept to the ATV world, giving the Rubicon a distinct identity within Honda’s rec-utility lineup.

Over time, the name evolved from a single model into a broader Rubicon family, with later generations and derivatives building on the same core idea: a durable, user-friendly ATV aimed at riders who wanted serious utility performance without the effort of a traditional manual-style setup. Honda’s history materials identify the Rubicon as one of the landmark ATV introductions of the 2000s, and the name has remained in active use ever since.

Today, Rubicon is still part of Honda’s ATV lineup, most prominently on the FourTrax Rubicon 700 4x4 Automatic and related FourTrax Foreman Rubicon variants. The nameplate has become especially well known among ranch, farm, and off-road users for combining practical trail manners with Honda’s long-running reputation for mechanical toughness. Because the Rubicon has remained continuously in production since its debut, it does not have separate discontinued-and-revived eras; it is best understood as an enduring Honda ATV nameplate that has been updated across generations rather than replaced.
