The Story of the Twinstar

Honda introduced this Twinstar-branded small-displacement twin in 1978 as part of its entry-level street lineup, aimed at riders who wanted a simple, approachable motorcycle with a more traditional look than Honda’s smaller singles and commuters. The first version appeared as the CM185T Twinstar for 1978 and 1979, and Honda later carried the same nameplate forward on the updated CM200T Twinstar for 1980 through 1982. Rather than being a long-running, heavily revised family, it was a compact, straightforward model line that evolved in place and stayed focused on basic everyday use.

The Twinstar became known for its easygoing character, modest size, and clean custom-style styling, which helped it stand out in Honda’s early-1980s cruiser and standard offerings. Its parallel-twin layout gave it a more refined feel than many beginner motorcycles of the era, while still keeping the bike accessible and uncomplicated. That combination made it a popular stepping stone for new riders and a practical small motorcycle for commuting and short-distance riding.

In historical terms, the Twinstar also matters because it sits in the early lineage of Honda’s small twin-cylinder street bikes in North America. The nameplate bridged the late-1970s CM185T and the later CM200T update without a break in the production run, ending after the 1982 model year. Its successor-era influence continued in Honda’s later small custom and entry-level twins, which carried forward the same emphasis on simplicity, reliability, and friendly everyday riding.
