The Story of the NX650

Honda introduced this large single-cylinder dual-sport in the late 1980s as part of its NX family, using the NX650 designation for export markets and the Dominator name in many regions. It was conceived as a road-oriented trail bike with genuine off-road styling and long-distance usability, sitting between lightweight enduros and larger adventure motorcycles. The model arrived in 1988 and quickly became best known in Europe, where it built a reputation as a simple, durable, go-anywhere machine with Honda’s familiar big RFVC single at its core.

The NX650’s history is closely tied to the changing dual-sport market of the 1990s. Honda updated the model over time, but it remained recognizably the same concept: a practical, air-cooled thumper with an upright riding position, modest bodywork, and an emphasis on easy ownership rather than high performance. In the United States, the NX650 had a short and limited run, while in Europe the nameplate carried on much longer and became especially well known among riders who wanted a capable everyday motorcycle that could also handle dirt roads and light adventure use.

Production continued through 2003, after which Honda moved on to newer dual-sport and adventure-oriented designs. The NX650 has since gained classic status, remembered as one of Honda’s most distinctive large singles and an important bridge between old-school enduros and the modern adventure-bike era.
