The Story of the CR-Z

The CR-Z was Honda’s compact sports hybrid coupe, introduced as a production model in 2010 after appearing as a concept in the late 2000s. Honda positioned it as a driver-focused hybrid rather than a pure economy car, pairing a distinctive two-door fastback body with hybrid technology and a sporty chassis tune. The name was presented by Honda as an abbreviation of “Compact Renaissance Zero,” reflecting the idea of starting from zero and rethinking what a compact coupe could be.

The nameplate launched first in Japan in February 2010, with other markets following that year and in 2011. Honda repeatedly described it as a sporty hybrid and used the model to showcase its approach to blending efficiency with more engaging driving dynamics. The car also drew interest from enthusiasts because it echoed the spirit of Honda’s earlier compact sport coupes, while adding electrified powertrain technology and a more modern design language.

In 2012, Honda refreshed the model and continued to develop it as a niche halo-style hybrid coupe rather than a mainstream volume car. Near the end of its run, Honda released a special “Final label” version in Japan and stated that production would end during 2016. That made 2016 the final model year for the original CR-Z nameplate. The model remains notable as one of Honda’s best-known attempts to combine hybrid efficiency with a small, enthusiast-oriented coupe format.
