MODEL HISTORY

The Story of the Cota 4RT 260

This trials model was introduced for the 2017 model year as the updated 4RT 260, a refined evolution of Montesa’s long-running factory trials family. It carried forward the compact, competition-focused character of the earlier 4RT line while bringing the model range into a new Euro 4 era. The 260 sat below the more specialized race versions in the lineup, offering a more accessible homologated machine for riders who wanted a serious trial bike with factory-developed hardware and a civil road-legal setup in some markets.

For 2020/21, the nameplate continued as Cota 4RT 260 and Cota 4RT 260 Race Replica in Montesa’s own manuals and model documentation. After that, the range was revised and the successor naming moved to 260R, with the 260 designation no longer appearing as the current model name. That makes the 260 a single, continuous production run rather than a revived nameplate.

Historically, the 4RT family is significant because it marked Montesa’s shift to modern four-stroke trial technology and became closely tied to its world-championship success. The 260 version represents the middle step in that lineage: a road-homologated trials motorcycle aimed at riders who wanted a proven, competition-bred platform with a softer edge than the purest race specials.
