Honda introduced this high-performance Civic variant in Japan for the 1997 model year as the third member of the Type R family, following the NSX Type R and Integra Type R. It was conceived as a sharper, race-inspired version of the Civic, aimed at delivering lightweight, agile handling and a more focused driving experience than the standard model. The original EK9 hatchback established the car’s identity as Honda’s accessible enthusiast flagship and helped define the modern hot-hatch formula for the brand. Over time, the nameplate evolved through several major generations and body styles, including Japanese-market and global performance hatchbacks, while maintaining its position as the Civic line’s most aggressive road-going derivative. Honda later expanded the Civic Type R into international markets, and the badge has continued as an ongoing performance nameplate rather than a discontinued-and-revived series.
