MODEL HISTORY

The Story of the Africa Twin Adventure Sports

Honda added the Africa Twin Adventure Sports nameplate to the revived Africa Twin family for the 2018 model year as a more touring-oriented, long-distance version of the standard bike. It was positioned as the road- and travel-focused counterpart to the base Africa Twin, with a larger fuel tank, taller wind protection, and suspension and chassis changes aimed at covering greater distances in comfort while preserving the model’s off-road character. The nameplate extended Honda’s long-running Africa Twin story rather than replacing it, building on the brand’s association with rally-inspired adventure motorcycles that dates back to the original Africa Twin of the late 1980s.

For the next major update, Honda carried the Adventure Sports concept into the CRF1100L generation, introduced for the 2020 model year after the 2019 development cycle. That revision kept the same basic mission but moved the model further toward long-haul adventure touring, with a stronger emphasis on comfort, electronics, and rider support. In Honda’s lineup, the Adventure Sports designation has remained the more capable touring variant of the Africa Twin family, distinct from the standard model’s lighter, more off-road-focused character. The nameplate has not been known to disappear and return, but it has evolved through major updates as the Africa Twin platform progressed.
