Honda introduced this adventure-oriented nameplate in 1988 as the XRV650, a production bike shaped by the company’s Paris-Dakar rally experience and intended to bring rally-style toughness to long-distance riding. The line was enlarged to XRV750 for 1990 and received a major redesign in 1993, becoming one of Honda’s best-known large adventure-tourers of its era. After its original production run ended in the early 2000s, the nameplate returned in 2016 as the CRF1000L, reviving the concept for a new generation of riders. Honda then updated it again with the CRF1100L in 2019, continuing the modern adventure-bike chapter of the same historic name. Because the nameplate has been discontinued and later revived, its history spans multiple distinct production periods rather than one continuous run.
