MODEL HISTORY

The Story of the XL1200T / SUPERLOW 1200T

Introduced for model year 2014, this touring-oriented Sportster expanded Harley-Davidson’s middleweight lineup with a low-seat, easy-reach package aimed at riders who wanted long-distance practicality without moving up to a full-size big-twin touring motorcycle. It combined the familiar Sportster chassis and 1200cc Evolution-era V-twin formula with factory touring equipment such as a detachable windshield, hard saddlebags, and a two-up seat, giving the bike a more relaxed, road-trip character than the standard Sportster variants.

The nameplate arrived during a period when Harley-Davidson was broadening the Sportster family beyond stripped-down urban cruisers and dark/custom styling. Rather than being a radical redesign, it was a purpose-built derivative that used the established Sportster platform and added comfort and cargo capability for commuting, weekend rides, and light touring. That made it especially appealing to riders who liked the manageable size and low-slung feel of the Sportster line but wanted more usefulness straight from the showroom.

This model’s run was relatively short and appears to have ended after the 2017 model year, making it a distinct but finite chapter in Sportster history. In enthusiast circles, it is remembered as one of the more practical factory Sportsters, bridging the gap between a standard roadster and a small touring machine.
