MODEL HISTORY

The Story of the Sportster S

Introduced for the 2021 model year, the Sportster S marked a major reinvention of one of Harley-Davidson’s best-known nameplates. Rather than continuing the long-running air-cooled formula associated with earlier Sportster models, this version arrived as a clean-sheet reinterpretation aimed at modern performance and a more aggressive, premium street presence. Harley-Davidson positioned it as the opening chapter of a new era for the Sportster line, blending the name’s heritage with a far more contemporary mechanical package and styling approach.

Historically, the Sportster badge had been associated with a broad family of lighter Harley-Davidson V-twins that dated back to the late 1950s. The Sportster S broke sharply from that tradition, using a structural liquid-cooled Revolution Max platform and a minimalist chassis layout that emphasized handling and a distinctly modern riding experience. Its design language also signaled the reset: a wide front tire, high-mounted exhaust, compact tail section, and prominent digital instrumentation gave it a stance closer to a muscular street performance machine than a classic cruiser.

The model’s significance lies in how it redefined what the Sportster name could mean in the 21st century. Instead of serving as a direct evolution of the older Sportster 883/1200 lineage, it became a new flagship interpretation of the badge—one that aimed to attract riders who wanted Harley-Davidson identity without the traditional retro format. Because Harley-Davidson continues to offer the model, it remains an active part of the company’s current lineup and the first generation of this modern Sportster S nameplate has not ended.
