MODEL HISTORY

The Story of the FLTC Ultra

This full-dress touring nameplate emerged in 1989 as the luxury version of the frame-faired Tour Glide line. It kept the long-distance emphasis that defined the series, using a large fixed fairing, integrated luggage, and touring equipment aimed at riders who wanted a more relaxed, cross-country setup than the standard touring models of the era. The designation belongs to the period when the touring family was still transitioning from the older Shovelhead years into the Evolution Big Twin era, so it sits at an important crossroads in the brand’s touring history.

For the early 1990s, the model continued as one of the most upscale two-up touring machines in the lineup. It was notable for combining the Tour Glide’s frame-mounted fairing layout with the premium Ultra specification, making it a distinct alternative to the fork-faired touring models that were more common in the same period. By the mid-1990s it was still listed in the touring parts catalog and service documentation, including 1995 and 1996 references, showing that the nameplate remained part of the lineup through the end of that model run.

The model was eventually discontinued after the 1996 model year, and its role in the company’s touring history was later carried forward by other large luxury touring motorcycles. Enthusiasts generally remember it as one of the classic factory touring machines from the pre-Project Rushmore era, valued for its traditional long-haul character and the distinctive frame-faired Tour Glide silhouette.
