MODEL HISTORY

The Story of the Sportster 1200 Low

Introduced for the 2006 model year, this low-slung 1200cc Sportster variant was Harley-Davidson’s answer for riders who wanted the torque and presence of the larger Evolution-powered Sportster engine in a more approachable chassis. It joined the long-running Sportster family during the mid-2000s refresh period, when Harley expanded the lineup with several distinct XL models aimed at different riding styles and reach preferences. The Low emphasized an easy flat-footed stance, relaxed ergonomics, and a stripped, compact look rather than outright performance or long-distance touring equipment.

Across its run, the model served as one of the more rider-friendly 1200cc Sportsters, sitting below the more upright or more aggressively styled members of the family and appealing especially to newer riders, shorter riders, and anyone who wanted a manageable Harley with the full-size 1200 engine. Harley-Davidson’s factory documentation shows the nameplate continuing through the 2011 model year, after which the Low designation was dropped from the Sportster 1200 range as the lineup shifted toward newer low-seat and specialty variants such as the SuperLow and later the Forty-Eight and Seventy-Two. In that sense, it represents a specific era of the air-cooled Sportster family: simple, accessible, and closely tied to the traditional XL platform before the range was reshaped in the 2010s.
