MODEL HISTORY

The Story of the Heritage Softail Classic

Introduced for the 1989 model year as the FLSTC, this Harley-Davidson softail cruiser was the more fully dressed evolution of the earlier FLST Heritage Softail theme, bringing a classic long-distance look to the company’s modern hidden-rear-suspension chassis. Its styling leaned heavily into Harley’s nostalgic touring heritage, with visual cues inspired by earlier postwar Big Twin models and the familiar side-of-the-road Americana that became part of the brand’s identity. Over time, it developed into one of Harley-Davidson’s most recognizable retro cruisers, positioned as a comfortable, chrome-rich machine for riders who wanted traditional appearance without giving up the Softail layout. The nameplate remained in the lineup through the 2017 model year. When Harley-Davidson overhauled its Softail family for 2018, the model was effectively succeeded by the renamed Heritage Classic, ending the Heritage Softail Classic badge after a long continuous run.
