The Story of the Roadster

Harley-Davidson has used the Roadster nameplate for more than one Sportster-era motorcycle, so its history is best understood in separate chapters. The earliest Roadster variant appeared in 1979 as the XLS Roadster, a more customized take on the traditional Sportster platform. It reflected the period’s growing interest in factory bikes with a sportier, more individualized look and stance, while still remaining rooted in the lightweight Sportster family that had become a cornerstone of Harley-Davidson’s lineup.

The Roadster name returned decades later on a very different motorcycle. In 2016, Harley-Davidson introduced the Roadster as part of the Sportster family, positioning it as a more aggressive, performance-oriented interpretation of the classic air-cooled V-twin Sportster formula. That modern Roadster emphasized a stripped, athletic style and closer ties to back-road riding than the brand’s more relaxed cruiser variants. It stood apart from other Sportster models by leaning into firmer suspension, stronger chassis presence, and a more purposeful riding position.

In Harley-Davidson’s recent lineup history, the Roadster was part of the final years of the traditional Sportster era before the family shifted direction with the introduction of the Sportster S in 2021. Because the Roadster name had already been used in an earlier production period and later revived on a separate model, it should be treated as a nameplate with multiple distinct production runs rather than one continuous model history.
