The Story of the Road King Classic

Introduced for the 1998 model year, this touring nameplate extended Harley-Davidson’s long-running Road King formula with a more nostalgic, heritage-focused presentation. It kept the upright, road-trip character that made the Road King line popular, but added visual cues aimed at riders who wanted a more vintage-inspired look: leather-covered hard saddlebags, laced wheels with whitewall tires, additional chrome and trimmed details, and the familiar touring presence that defined the platform. In Harley-Davidson’s own model-code references, the nameplate is identified as FLHRC/FLHRCI, and factory model listings show it running from 1998 through 2019. The model sat in the brand’s Touring family rather than as a separate chassis concept, serving as the more classic-styled counterpart to the standard Road King. It became a favorite among riders who wanted full-size touring capability without the full fairing-heavy appearance of the Electra Glide family, and it remained part of the lineup until the end of the 2019 model year, after which Harley-Davidson continued the standard Road King but not this Classic version.
