The Story of the Road King 103

This designation refers to the standard Road King touring motorcycle as sold with Harley-Davidson’s 103-cubic-inch Twin Cam V-twin. Harley-Davidson introduced the 103 engine on the Road King for the 2012 model year, replacing the earlier 96 cubic-inch setup and giving the long-running bagger a stronger touring-focused powertrain. The Road King itself remained one of the brand’s classic stripped-down touring models, known for its detachable windshield, hard saddlebags, tank-mounted instrumentation, and traditional chrome-heavy styling that set it apart from fairing-equipped tourers.

From 2012 through 2016, the Road King 103 represented the standard Road King formula before the model was updated for 2017 with Harley-Davidson’s Milwaukee-Eight 107 engine. That makes the 103-equipped version a distinct late-Twin Cam era Road King, especially significant to riders who prefer the more traditional look and feel of the FLHR without the larger dresser fairing. It is often remembered as the final standard Road King configuration of the Twin Cam generation.
