MODEL HISTORY

The Story of the Iron 883

Introduced for the 2009 model year, this Sportster variant marked Harley-Davidson’s push toward a stripped-down, blacked-out factory custom look. It arrived as part of the brand’s Dark Custom direction and stood out as a minimalist, urban-oriented take on the long-running Sportster family, using the familiar 883 cc Evolution V-twin in a lowered, bobber-inspired package. The model’s appeal came from its simple styling, low seat, and easy customizer reputation rather than from chasing outright performance.

Over time, it became one of the best-known entry points into Harley-Davidson ownership, especially for riders drawn to the compact Sportster chassis and the bike’s understated, all-black attitude. The nameplate stayed closely associated with the XL883N code and remained part of the Sportster line for many years, appearing in official Harley-Davidson materials through the 2022 model year. After that, the nameplate was dropped as Harley-Davidson reworked its middleweight lineup around newer Sportster models. There is no separate earlier or later production run for this nameplate; it had one continuous run from introduction to discontinuation.
