The Story of the Heritage Springer

Introduced for the 1997 model year, this Softail-based cruiser revived Harley-Davidson’s classic Springer front-end look in a factory-built motorcycle aimed at riders who wanted old-school styling with modern production reliability. It carried the FLSTS designation and sat within the Softail family, pairing a low-slung chassis with period-inspired details such as the Springer fork, valanced fenders, and nostalgic trim cues that echoed earlier Harley customs. The model quickly became a favorite among riders drawn to heritage styling rather than outright performance, and it stood out in the lineup as one of the company’s most overt nods to its postwar design language. Production continued through the 2003 model year, after which the nameplate was discontinued. The machine is remembered as one of the most recognizable factory retro Harley-Davidsons of its era and as a key part of the brand’s late-1990s Softail history.
