MODEL HISTORY

The Story of the FXLRS / Low Rider S

This performance-oriented cruiser nameplate first appeared for the 2016 model year as a darker, more aggressive take on Harley-Davidson’s long-running Low Rider lineage. The original version was launched as a Dyna-based factory custom, positioned as a stripped-down street machine with a more assertive riding stance, heavy blackout treatment, and premium performance hardware aimed at riders who wanted a muscle-cruiser feel rather than classic chrome-heavy styling.

For the 2018 model year, the nameplate returned on Harley-Davidson’s redesigned Softail platform, reflecting the company’s broader chassis consolidation and bringing the model into the new-generation cruiser family. That change marked an important technical and visual shift: the motorcycle kept its performance-first identity, but its underpinnings and proportions were updated to match the newer Softail architecture. In Harley-Davidson’s lineup, it remained a factory-custom, blacked-out cruiser with a more aggressive, sportier character than the brand’s traditional heritage models.

The nameplate continued through subsequent model years and remains part of Harley-Davidson’s current cruiser range. Its appeal has been tied to the combination of the classic Low Rider name, a no-nonsense stance, and a performance image that helped define Harley-Davidson’s modern factory-custom era. Rather than being a nostalgic retro model, it has generally been marketed as the harder-edged, more muscular interpretation of the Low Rider theme.
