The Story of the FLSL / Softail Slim

The Softail Slim was part of Harley-Davidson’s modern Softail family and was positioned as a stripped-down, low-slung bobber with old-school styling cues. In Harley-Davidson’s 2018 Softail redesign, the Slim returned as the FLSL model code, carrying forward the nameplate into the new chassis rather than continuing the earlier pre-2018 Softail Slim variant. The 2018 version kept the Slim’s signature minimalist look, with a solo seat, chopped fenders, Hollywood-style handlebars, and a dark, relatively clean visual treatment that emphasized the engine and frame rather than chrome or ornament.

As a member of the 2018 Softail line, the Slim reflected Harley-Davidson’s broader shift away from the previous Softail and Dyna-era layouts and into a lighter, stiffer platform with hidden rear suspension. That change gave the bike a more contemporary ride while preserving the hardtail-inspired silhouette that had long defined the Softail family. The Slim’s character was rooted in bobber and postwar custom inspiration, but its execution was modernized for riders who wanted a classic look without giving up current chassis technology.

The model continued through the 2021 model year, after which it disappeared from Harley-Davidson’s subsequent Softail model listings. In enthusiast circles, the Slim is remembered as one of the more tastefully simplified Softail variants: less elaborate than the Heritage-style cruisers, but more traditional in stance and presentation than many of the brand’s heavier chrome-forward bikes. Its appeal was the balance of vintage attitude, everyday usability, and the cleaner proportions of the 2018-on Softail platform.
