MODEL HISTORY

The Story of the FLHTC Ultra

Introduced for the 1989 model year, this Harley-Davidson touring nameplate represented the fully dressed end of the Electra Glide family, combining long-distance comfort with the brand’s batwing-fairing touring formula. It arrived as Harley-Davidson was expanding its big-twin touring lineup beyond the more basic Electra Glide and into a higher-equipment flagship aimed at riders who wanted factory-installed wind protection, luggage capacity, passenger comfort and a more complete cross-country setup.

Over time, the nameplate evolved alongside Harley-Davidson’s touring line. Early versions reflected the company’s late-Evolution-era heavyweight touring architecture, while later examples adopted fuel injection and then the Twin Cam generation. Harley-Davidson eventually split the family further as newer touring variants arrived, including Ultra Limited models and other derivative tourers, but this classic Ultra Classic Electra Glide identity remained an important reference point for the company’s traditional full-dress road bikes.

The nameplate’s production run ended after the 2019 model year, closing a long, continuous stretch that made it one of Harley-Davidson’s best-known touring badges. Among enthusiasts, it is closely associated with the archetypal American full-dress motorcycle: large, comfortable, luggage-equipped, and built for interstate mileage rather than stripped-down performance.
