MODEL HISTORY

The Story of the FLHR

This touring nameplate debuted for the 1994 model year as a modern, stripped-down Harley-Davidson that blended old-school styling cues with contemporary long-distance capability. Harley-Davidson’s own history materials describe it as a later addition to the Touring line that drew inspiration from earlier FLH and Electra Glide traditions, including vintage front-end styling and classic two-tone visual themes. The result was a large American road bike aimed at riders who wanted the touring comfort of the brand’s big twins without the full dress look of a fairing-heavy machine.

Over time, it became one of Harley-Davidson’s most recognizable touring models, known for its chrome-heavy, nostalgic presentation and detachable windshield setup. The model also served as a base for later variants and special editions, helping define the company’s classic bagger image through the 1990s and 2000s. Official Harley-Davidson model-code references identify FLHR as the Road King designation.

Available official model-year materials show the standard FLHR Road King in the 2022 model year, while later Harley-Davidson lineup and owner’s-manual materials shift to the Road King Special instead, indicating that the standard Road King’s production run ended after 2022.
