The Story of the G80

This luxury sedan nameplate traces its roots to the earlier executive sedan that helped establish Genesis as a standalone luxury brand. In 2016, the revised second-generation model adopted the new G80 name and entered the market as part of Genesis’s early lineup, effectively carrying forward the lineage of the original large sedan while giving it a distinct brand identity. That move marked an important transition: the car was no longer just a Hyundai-badged predecessor, but a Genesis-branded model aligned with the company’s new naming convention.

The first G80 era ran as a rear-wheel-drive luxury sedan positioned below the flagship G90, with an emphasis on refinement, understated design, and a traditional premium-sedan layout. A sport-oriented variant later broadened its appeal by adding a more aggressive look and performance-focused tuning, helping the car reach buyers who wanted a more driver-centric personality without leaving the luxury segment.

A major redesign arrived for the 2021 model year, introducing a fresh generation with a lower, sleeker profile and updated technology and cabin presentation. Genesis then expanded the line with an all-electric derivative in 2021, which gave the nameplate a second powertrain direction while preserving the core sedan identity. In 2023, the combustion model received a notable refresh rather than a full replacement, keeping the same generation alive with revised styling and equipment. The result is a modern Genesis cornerstone: a long-running luxury sedan nameplate that evolved from a rebadged predecessor into one of the brand’s most recognizable models.
