The Story of the Festiva

Ford’s Festiva was the company’s entry-level imported subcompact for North America, developed from a Mazda-based design and built in South Korea by Kia. It was introduced to U.S. buyers as an economical, lightweight small car aimed at first-time owners and budget-conscious drivers, arriving for the 1988 model year after a late-1987 market launch. The Festiva fit neatly into Ford’s lineup as a simple, fuel-sipping hatchback at a time when inexpensive import compacts were a major segment of the market.

In the United States, the nameplate ran continuously through the 1993 model year. The car was sold as a practical two- and four-door hatchback, and its unpretentious packaging made it memorable as one of the most affordable Ford-badged cars of its era. Its roots traced to the Mazda 121/Kia Pride family, which gave the Festiva an international backstory unusual for a Ford marketed in America. After 1993, Ford replaced it with the Aspire, ending the Festiva nameplate in North America without a later revival.
