MODEL HISTORY

The Story of the Expedition EL

The Expedition EL was Ford’s extended-wheelbase version of its full-size SUV, introduced for the 2007 model year alongside the third-generation Expedition. It was created to give buyers more cargo space and a longer body while keeping the same basic family-hauling, body-on-frame mission as the standard-wheelbase truck. The EL name was used in the U.S. for this long-wheelbase version, while some markets used different naming conventions for the same concept.

For its first years, the Expedition EL shared the Expedition’s mainstream trims and truck-based layout, but its longer wheelbase and added rear overhang made it the more spacious choice for buyers who needed maximum interior and cargo room. In 2015, Ford updated the Expedition line with the EcoBoost V6 and other refinements, and the EL continued as the stretched variant through the end of that generation. Ford then replaced the EL badge with Expedition MAX for the all-new 2018 model year, marking the end of the EL nameplate after the 2017 model year.

As a result, Expedition EL is best understood as the long-wheelbase Expedition of the 2007-2017 era: a practical, truck-based full-size SUV aimed at families, towing, and utility buyers who wanted more space than the standard model provided.
