SBE appears to be Ducati’s internal code for the first-generation Superbike family of the early 2000s, spanning the 749/999 era. Ducati introduced the 999 for the 2003 model year as a radically reworked successor to the 916/996 line, and the family continued through the 2006 model year before being replaced by the 1098. The 999 marked a major styling and engineering departure for Ducati, with Pierre Terblanche’s sharper design language, twin headlights and a more modern chassis approach than the 916-derived bikes that preceded it. In competition, the 999 quickly established its significance, helping Ducati secure World Superbike titles in 2003, 2004 and 2006. The related 749 shared the same generation and design philosophy as the smaller-displacement counterpart in the same Superbike range. Because this designation is an internal model code rather than a marketed nameplate, it is best understood as the Superbike platform identifier for that specific 2003–2006 Ducati era.
