Rather than simply evolve the earlier design, it was conceived as a fresh interpretation of Ducati’s flagship sportbike formula, with styling and engineering that deliberately broke from the single-sided visual identity of its predecessor. The nameplate quickly proved its worth on track. It debuted in World Superbike in 2003 and immediately delivered results, helping Ducati continue its dominant run in production-based racing. The platform went on to secure world titles in 2003, 2004 and 2006, and it became one of the most discussed superbikes of its era for the way it combined aggressive race intent with a more modern, uncompromising layout.
Its production run was comparatively short. Ducati later replaced it with a more 916-inspired successor, bringing this chapter of the company’s superbike history to a close after the 2006 model year. Enthusiasts still view it as an important transitional machine: the bridge between the iconic 916 family and the later superbikes that followed, and one of the defining road-race Ducatis of the 2000s.
