The Story of the LEGANZA

This midsize four-door sedan arrived for the 1997 model year as Daewoo’s new flagship passenger car, replacing the older Espero in the brand’s lineup. It was developed during a period when Daewoo was trying to move upmarket and present a more modern, internationally styled product, and the car’s clean exterior came from Italian design influence rather than the more conservative shapes associated with the company’s earlier sedans. Built on a front-wheel-drive layout, it was positioned as a larger, more upscale family car and served as one of the brand’s key global offerings in the late 1990s.

The model found its widest recognition in export markets as one of the main vehicles in Daewoo’s push into Europe and, later, North America. In the United States, it arrived near the end of the decade and was marketed as the company’s flagship sedan, aimed at buyers who wanted a roomy, well-equipped car without stepping into a premium brand. Across its life cycle, it remained a single-generation nameplate, with updates focused on trim, equipment and market-specific tuning rather than a full redesign.

Production ended in 2002, after which the nameplate did not continue as a direct regular-production model. In the broader Daewoo history, it represents the company’s most recognizable attempt to compete in the global midsize-sedan class before the brand’s transition into the GM era. For enthusiasts and shoppers of late-1990s Korean cars, it stands out as an important example of Daewoo’s ambition during that period: stylish, export-oriented and intended to raise the brand’s profile beyond its domestic market.
