BMW introduced the R 1200 RS for the 2015 model year as a modern boxer-powered sports tourer, reviving the long-running RS badge in a form aimed at riders who wanted a more athletic alternative to the brand’s larger touring models. The nameplate traces its heritage to the original R 100 RS of 1976, a landmark motorcycle that helped define the sports-touring category with its wind-tunnel-developed fairing and blend of long-distance comfort and road-going pace.
The R 1200 RS itself occupied the middle ground between BMW’s roadster and full touring motorcycles. It combined the company’s opposed-twin character with a semi-faired, travel-oriented chassis and a riding position suited to both spirited back-road use and everyday distance riding. That positioning made it one of the more balanced motorcycles in BMW’s boxer lineup, appealing to riders who wanted shaft-driven touring ability without moving all the way up to a larger luxury tourer.
BMW kept the R 1200 RS in production through the 2019 model year. For 2020, the model line was replaced by the R 1250 RS, which carried the RS concept forward with BMW’s updated 1,254 cc boxer platform. In BMW Motorrad history, the R 1200 RS stands as the fifth-generation boxer RS and as the model that reintroduced the RS name to a new generation of sport-touring riders.
