BMW introduced the i8 as the flagship sports car of its BMW i sub-brand, bringing the Vision EfficientDynamics concept’s futuristic design and plug-in hybrid idea into production. It reached customers in 2014 as BMW’s first series-produced plug-in hybrid sports car and quickly became one of the most recognizable modern BMWs, thanks to its low-slung proportions, dramatic shape, and emphasis on combining performance with efficiency rather than treating them as opposites.
The i8 began life as the coupe, which defined the model’s original identity and established its place as a halo car for BMW’s new electrified era. In 2017, BMW expanded the line with the i8 Roadster, giving the nameplate a second body style and broadening its appeal while keeping the same general design language and hybrid sports-car concept. That roadster and the updated coupe continued the i8 story through the end of production.
The nameplate remained a relatively small-volume but highly significant part of BMW history because it signaled a major shift in the company’s image and engineering priorities. It stood out as an early, high-profile example of electrified performance at a time when plug-in hybrids were still unusual in the sports-car segment. Production ended in 2020 at BMW Group Plant Leipzig, closing the model’s single continuous run without a later revival.
