The Story of the G 310 GS

BMW’s small-displacement GS adventure motorcycle was introduced in 2016 as a compact, entry-level member of the GS family and a way to bring the brand’s long-running dual-sport identity to a lighter, more accessible segment. It was developed as a road-oriented adventure model built around the same basic single-cylinder platform used by the related roadster, but styled and positioned to echo the larger GS machines that define BMW Motorrad’s adventure lineup. In BMW’s own contemporary press material, the model was described as a new experience in the sub-500 cc class and as a genuine GS aimed especially at newer riders.

The nameplate reached the market with a clear “everyday adventure” brief: upright ergonomics, GS-inspired bodywork, and practical equipment intended to make commuting, urban riding, and light travel feel more substantial than a typical beginner motorcycle. That formula has become the model’s key historical identity. BMW refreshed the bike for the 2020 model year, updating it with revised features and a more modern presentation while keeping its core role in the lineup intact.

The model remains part of BMW Motorrad’s current adventure range, serving as the brand’s most approachable GS and a gateway into the broader GS heritage. Rather than being a niche one-off, it represents BMW’s effort to translate the GS concept into a smaller, globally relevant format for riders who want adventure styling and everyday versatility without moving up to the larger boxer-engined models.
