BMW’s 535i nameplate has appeared in more than one distinct era of the 5 Series, rather than as a single uninterrupted model run. BMW’s own M history traces the first “hot” 5 Series road cars back to the mid-1970s, when Motorsport-developed versions included the 535i badge alongside other performance-oriented early 5 Series variants. In BMW’s 5 Series history, the badge returns as part of the third-generation E34-era lineup in 1988, when the 535i sat among the launch models for that generation’s six-cylinder range.
