BMW introduced the 318is as a sportier four-cylinder 3 Series derivative in 1989, first on the E30 generation. On the E36, the model remained positioned as the lively, higher-spec four-cylinder choice in the 3 Series lineup, combining everyday usability with a more performance-oriented character than the standard 318i. The 318is earned a strong reputation as one of the most interesting entry-level performance BMWs of its era.
