The Story of the 318iS

BMW introduced the 318is as a sportier four-cylinder 3 Series derivative in 1989, first on the E30 generation. It stood out from the more basic 318i by using a four-valve-per-cylinder engine and chassis hardware aimed at drivers who wanted a lighter, more focused BMW without stepping up to a six-cylinder car. In BMW’s own history, the 318is is noted as the brand’s first production four-cylinder model with a four-valve cylinder head, which helped make it especially significant among enthusiasts.

The nameplate continued into the E36 era, where BMW offered the 318is in several body styles depending on market, including coupe, sedan, and convertible versions. On the E36, the model remained positioned as the lively, higher-spec four-cylinder choice in the 3 Series lineup, combining everyday usability with a more performance-oriented character than the standard 318i. BMW later updated the engine in some versions, but the formula remained the same: a compact, driver-focused 3 Series with extra emphasis on revs, balance, and enthusiast appeal.

The 318is earned a strong reputation as one of the most interesting entry-level performance BMWs of its era. It bridged the gap between ordinary four-cylinder 3 Series models and the more expensive six-cylinder cars, and today it is remembered as a cult favorite among BMW fans for its blend of simplicity, responsiveness, and classic rear-wheel-drive character.
