The DB9 was Aston Martin’s all-new grand tourer for the modern Gaydon era and the direct successor to the DB7. It was the first model built at Aston Martin’s new purpose-built factory in Gaydon, and the first to use the company’s VH architecture, marking a major step forward in the brand’s engineering and manufacturing approach. Aston Martin introduced the DB9 in 2003, and it is generally identified as a 2004-model-year car in the brand’s own materials. The nameplate was chosen instead of a sequential DB8 designation because Aston Martin felt the car represented such a large leap over its predecessor.
The DB9 established the formula for Aston Martin’s contemporary V12-powered 2+2 grand tourers, combining long-hood proportions, a formal coupe body, and a more elegant touring character than a pure sports car. The Volante convertible followed soon after and carried the same basic design language into open-top form. Over its life, the DB9 became one of the defining Aston Martin models of the 2000s, helping to set the visual and technical direction for later company cars.
Production ran through 2012 before the DB9 line was replaced by newer Aston Martin grand tourers. It remains significant as the car that launched Aston Martin’s Gaydon-era identity and bridged the brand’s classic DB bloodline into the 21st century.
